How much Paper do You Need
In Germany we have an annual usage of 253kg per person, with the tendency to continue to rise, and US citizens use 312kg per person. Why do we need so much paper? Have you ever thought about where the paper comes from? To be honest, I don´t think about trees every time I read my newspaper. But, Germany and the US are one of the biggest producers of paper in the world and you have to cut down a lot of trees to produce e.g. 26.3 billion tons of paper (as Germany did in 2006)
Keeping the Climate in Balance
Precious forests in Africa (like in Congo), Indonesia, Finland and many other countries are destroyed (see also wwf or greenpeace). Trees are cut down, sometimes even illegally, and with that the homes of many animals are destroyed. We all know how important trees are for our climate - they absorb carbon, which is destroying our climate and In return, they produce oxygen which is the foundation of life for us and most species on our planet. Especially the rain-forest which works like a huge air-conditioner keeping the atmosphere in balance.
Look in the Paper Bin
With that in mind, the morning newspaper gets a whole new perspective. The good thing is that many of us dispose paper separately and with that allow for better recycling. But have a look in the paper bin, is all of that really needed? You can do several things to help save paper and more importantly save the forests:
